July 2011

Wanted
Two volunteers, one to act as Cumbria Results Officer (taking the results of matches in Cumbria from the league controller or club secretaries and sending them in to the ECF using a format supplied by them) and the other to act as a Junior Organiser for the south of the county, working in conjunction with Kevin Southernwood to help promote junior chess. We could do with another assistant junior organiser in the west of the county if anyone can find the time.

Please contact CCA President Dave Cole if you can fill any of these positions or would like to give it a try.

The Robert Patla Charity Simultaneous Tournament
Photo of games in session

Overall a big success, particularly the younger player seemed to have both enjoyed it and have had good results as well. The elder of the Davis brothers (Kevin will know his name) being the last man standing after a hard battle and unfortunately Chris losing after being swindled out of a sure-won endgame by Robert.

So, big “Thank you’s” to the Crown for providing the venue, your good selves for the support and equipment, Robert for giving up his time for us and everybody for taking part and for their kind donations. Many present said it turned out a fun event and it is definitely something we should try and organise again in the future.

Donations varied between £5 and £20 and came in total to £160. We still haven’t decided on a charitable cause, but Robert mentioned a local children’s charity some time before the event. I currently hold the money and will pass it on once a decision is made.

For those who weren’t present at the end; Robert thanked everyone for playing and said it turned out harder than he imagined.

Time-wise we didn’t start on time probably around 14:30 and we were done by, I think, around 17:00 which wasn’t too bad, although probably quite a challenge for Robert with very little in the way of breaks.

Many thanks once again to all.
