County U150 matches

Lancashire v Cumbria
7th March 2009
The second county match of the season, against Lancashire, was played on the 7th March, only two weeks after our match against Yorkshire and one week after the individual championship. This year, the match inaugurated a new venue, the Lancaster Royal Grammar School, which proved to be an excellent place to play with ideal conditions of quietness, room and parking facilities, and light refreshments.
After our previous lost against Yorkshire, Cumbria needed to win at least on the score of 7-5 to qualify for the runner-up quarter-finale. The match was very challenging and it was not until the last three boards finished that the result of the match was decided. Eventually Cumbria lost on the score of 5-7, but there have been some excellent performances in the team. Three boards won: Dave Cole and Dave McMath, both playing with the black pieces, and David Jarmany who was playing a friend and previous club mate on board 2. David’s opponent, Dave Gaston, played the unusual Balogh defense of the Dutch opening, which allowed David to quickly take control of the centre. After Dave misplayed his knight, David launched a sharp mating attack on the centre and the kingside, which decided the win. It took however more than 50 moves for Dave Gaston to resign. Four draws where obtained from Andy McAtear, Jim Woodburn, George Horne and Tony Kirby. George and Tony were the last ones to finish and showed an extraordinary resilience. Well done to them!
In both county matches this year, we scored a better result than last year, and I am confident that next year we can achieve even more. A big thanks to all the players involved and to everyone for your dedication to chess in Cumbria.
Philippe Gleizon

Cumbria v Yorkshire
22th February 2009

Cumbria played his first county match of the season on the 22nd February against Yorkshire in a cordial atmosphere at the Beacon Social Club in Penrith. I would like to express all my gratitude to Andy McAtear for accepting to host the match in the premises of Penrith Chess Club, and for his help in organising it. The match started at 2pm despite the absence of the Yorkshire team captain and two of his club mates! As usual the Yorkshire team showed a very strong side and was clearly outgrading us on all boards except on the first two boards.
In spite of a good effort, Cumbria lost on the final score of 4.5-7.5. This was an honourable score considering the strength of the Yorkshire team and the fact that last year we lost on a worse score of 2-10 against almost the same team.
Most of the points were scored by the first 7 boards that all managed to draw or win their games. The only win for the team was achieved by Dave Cole who had a superior position during all the game and finally put his opponent in zugzwang in the endgame. Some of the draws were saved from an inferior position and even could have turned into a win. This was the case on boards 4 and 5 where Philippe Gleizon and Peter Shaw both lost a pawn in the middlegame but hold the position to a drawn endgame. Philippe, who was playing the Yorkshire captain, tied the position with a Damiano pawn and a back rank mating threat. Also congratulations to Peter Caulfield who opposed a stiff resistance to his opponent and secured another draw for the team.
Our final score was all the more acceptable that Lancashire lost previously to Yorkshire on the score of 5-7. Therefore Cumbria can still qualify for the runners-up quarter-finals if we can win with only one point difference our next match against Lancashire, on Saturday 7th March, at the Reform Club in Lancaster.
Many thanks for your time and effort to all involved in that match against Yorkshire.
Philippe Gleizon

A very competitive section as ever and lead for the first 4 rounds by Lewis McAtear. Bob Mitcheson ended his chances in round 5 but then was in a tie with Neil Jones that tiebreaks failed to sort so they agreed a 10-minute blitz game which was won by Neil. Better luck next year Bob and sorry about the three blacks. Third place and grading prize went to Lewis, Kevin and Steve.

This was a competitive competition despite the small entry. Going into the last round 4 players were tied for the lead, including last year's winner Bill Henderson and the surprise packet of the section Dan Zurek from Slovakia, a pupil at Lime House School near Carlisle.  He and Albert Soler have improved immensely since the schools league jamboree inNovember and now can give anyone a stiff game as Philippe can testify. The final result was a tie between two of the Bills and Bill Hardwick won the title by the narrowest of margins, 12 to11.5 on the sum of cumulative scores. Well played too to Joe Biggans whose firsttournament this was.

* Other games played to avoid players sitting out were:
  Joe Biggans  0-1 Syd Cassidy
  Drew Millar 0-1 Syd Cassidy
  John Kelly 1-0 Alan Hiatt
  Philippe Gleizon 1-0 Albert Soler
