South Tyne League

South Tyne Jamboree

held at The Haydonian Club, Haydon Bridge on 17th June 2008.

An enjoyable night was had by all, I hope, and everything ran fairly smoothly once we got going.
As the scores show it was a very close competition and the lead changed several times.
Thanks to David Tulip for organising the venue and the excellent food; to treasurer Bill Hardwick for organising board prizes for the league and the South Tyne jamboree trophy; and to Mrs Fulton for coming along to present the board prizes, league trophy and the Arthur Fulton Memorial Trophy in memory of her husband to the jamboree winners, which was a 3-way tie.
She also did the draw and earned great praise from David Tulip for picking his number out. Fix??

Leader Board for 2007-08 season

South Tyne League Individual Rapidplay
held at the Haydonian Working Mens Club, Haydon Bridge on May 18th.

This tournament was introduced last year for the first time and drew a good response but this year produced a poor turnout, with eleven of last year’s entrants missing and nobody at all from the Hexham area participating. As a result the final round pairings left a lot to be desired, perhaps we might have stopped after 4 games.

Nevertheless there were a lot of close games and the time handicapping system is certainly a great leveller, though not to Ian as he won for the second year without dropping a game. Well done. Well done to Colin as well; despite giving considerable time advantages to all his opponents, in one game he started with 6 minutes to his opponent’s 54, he comfortably gave as good as he got. This year’s grading prize went to 11 year old Camas: competing in his first adult tournament he was by no means nervous and saw off two adults with style. A final word of thanks to David for laying on food for an army (we did our best to eat it!) and welcome back to the chess-playing world after the operations.
