Carlisle Primary Schools Team Knockout Tournament

held at Belah School on 23.6.08
This was a very good competition, well-organised as usual by David Bird of Inglewood School.
The quality of chess played was very good and many of the matches hung on the result of the final game out of the five. It was good to see newcomers Calthwaite competing strongly and though they went out in the first round this year I am sure headmaster Geoff Norman will have them back again next year stronger and meaner. Unfortunately one of our stronger schools, Stanwix, were absent but we still had twelve teams of five plus reserves, so well over 60 young players took part and I watched some fascinating games.

Congratulations to Belah in their last ever chess tournament as the school closes in the next few weeks. In the A division of the league they won four of their five matches, beating Inglewood, Kingmoor, Thursby and Stanwix and got a draw against St Monica's in the other. They rectified that in this knockout cup final and so won the trophy for the third year in a row. Well done to coach Drew Millar and his boys.

Congratulations to High Hesket too on winning the B division of the league. Well done.
Good luck to Mike Jordan of Inglewood who has helped David run more chess tournaments than I care to remember and is now off to Egypt to teach in Cairo.Perhaps we will have more exotic entries to the Carlisle Schools knockout next year?

Cumbria Junior Chess Championships

held at Austin Friars St Monica's School on Saturday March 8th 2008

Once again the county's best junior chess players, or at least those of them who knew of the event and were able to come to it, gathered in Carlisle to battle it out for honours in the five age groups. The quality of play in some of the games was absolutely outstanding and does enormous credit to the youngsters and the people who helped them along the way to attain the skills they displayed. Behaviour and sportsmanship was again excellent and the whole day ran smoothly apart from yours truly wiping all the results from the under 11 tournament in an attempt to delete two players who had withdrawn after round 1.

Thanks are due to those people who helped run the day: Geoff Norman (now head of Calthwaite School), Drew Millar (Belah School and AF club), Richard Bandoni (Austin Friars St Monica's School) and Daniel O'Dowd of Carlisle Chess Club who ran all the secondary sections on his own.
And finally thanks to the young players themselves, they were marvellous throughout a long and tiring day; their parents and teachers for bringing them and preparing them so well.

It was good to see the trophies spread around this year. Three came from Carlisle, in the under 9, under 15 and under 18 sections while the under 11 went to Penrith and under 13 to Seascale. The girl champions were also scattered, coming from Penrith, Carlisle and Seascale.

ECF Schools Cup

This year only one Cumbrian School entered this tournament, a very brave primary team from Belah School in Carlisle. The school won the Carlisle primary school league and cup double last year but unfortunately the county council have decided to close the school down so this is its last year in existence. As a result of this decision the school has been haemorrhaging pupils, including most of the chess-playing pupils and team coach Drew Millar is literally down to his last 6 players, which just happens to be the number needed for a team in the ECF cup. They were drawn against Greenwood Academy , a strong chess-playing school from Ayrshire, who travelled to Carlisle with A and B teams to take on their junior opponents. First off was Belah v Greenwood B team and there was huge interest from the onlookers as it became clear that an upset was on the cards. This is an age handicap competition and Greenwood had to win by at least 4.5 — 1.5 but it was clear that wasn’t going to happen. In fact the 8, 9 and 10 year olds played really well, bullied their elders by outplaying them and won 4—2 themselves. The fairy tale was not to be. Again because of the age handicap, Greenwood A had to win by at least 5—1, so a win and a draw would be enough for Belah to go through. In fact Greenwood A had learned not to underestimate primary players, concentrated on playing mistake-free chess and won 6—0. Nevertheless it was a very competitive day for Belah and they can be proud of winning the first match.

Carlisle Under 9 Championships

held at Inglewood Junior School 2.2.2008

Thanks as ever are due to David Bird and the Inglewood team who made this another excellent tournament. Accelerated Swiss tournaments, where as soon as players finish one game they are paired with a new opponent, keep everyone busy and that applies to the organisers as well as the children playing. This one went as smoothly as clockwork and the quality of chess from 7, 8 and 9 year olds was often very good, evidence of the amount of thought and effort put in by the children and their teachers. Sometimes it gets very interesting, such as when two youngsters, neither with a king on the board, asked who was winning.
All those on 50% or more are invited to enter the Cumbria junior championships, to be held at Austin Friars St Monica's School on Saturday March 8th. Hopefully they will all come and the county championships will be as competitive as this Carlisle championship was.

Penrith Under 11 Chess Tournament

held at Plumpton School 31.1.2008
Many thanks to Mr Alan Davis, head of Plumpton School, for arranging this each year and running it so quietly and effectively. The numbers coming along, 68 this year, show he has a winning formula.

All those who scored 3 or more are invited to the Cumbria Championships on March 8th at Carlisle. (Details above.)

Cumbria Team of 4 Tournament for Juniors

held at Austin Friars St Monica's School on 15 December 2007.
This year's tournament drew a good entry, as it has for the last ten years. The Royal Grammar School from Newcastle were reduced in number this year since this tournament was after the end of their term but were as competitive as ever; Greenwood Academy and Georgetown School showed junior chess is very much alive north of the border; we welcomed newcomers in the shape of Calthwaite and Queen Elizabeth Grammar School from Penrith; and we welcomed the return of Scotby School, winners in 2003, after a two year absence.

The differences in age and experience among teams and players was reflected in the games played: there were a lot of very thoughtful and skilful games which showed a huge knowledge of the game and there were also a number which showed a flexible attitude to the laws of chess and a creative approach to the game. Above all there was a lot of fun had and a big willingness to learn and a blissful unawareness of the noise levels that 120+ young people can make as they concentrate on their moves.

Both sections were very competitive. In the primary section five teams could still win going into the last round, in the secondary three teams were in with a chance with just a few minutes of the final round to play. Congratulations to the teams from Newcastle and Ayrshire who made the long trip to Carlisle well worth while by making off with the overall winners' trophies. Congratulations to Stanwix and Austin Friars who won the trophies for the winning Cumbria teams. In fact Stanwix finished equal on points with Belah but Stanwix took the cup (from last year's winners who just happened to be Belah) as they had won the match between them 3-1 and neither team fancied a playoff match very much. I'm sure this result will heighten their rivalry in the Carlisle primary schools league and knockout cup later in the season. Congratulations as well to all the other teams who didn't win trophies but played their part in making this another enjoyable tournament.

Finally it's time to thank the parents and teachers who brought these competitors along and looked after them through the day and in many cases helped sort out problems and offered on-the-spot coaching. Special mention goes to Mr Choudhury of St Monica's, Drew Millar of Austin Friars Chess Club (and coach of the Belah team), Daniel O'Dowd and Tony Baker of Carlisle Chess Club (Tony also coaches Scotby) and Harry Wisdom of the Alchemy Young Enterprise company in Austin Friars for running the tournaments. Without them the day would not have happened. The faults and chaotic start can be laid at my door and any comments and queries about the day sent to me.

Carlisle Under 11 Chess Championships

held at Inglewood Junior School 10.11.2007
Thanks once again to David Bird and his team from Inglewood Junior School for organising a very good tournament and congratulations to the young players who produced a lot of excellent chess and played every game courteously and sportingly. All the hard work put in by them and their coaches showed on the day. All players who finished with 50% and above have qualified for the Cumbria Chess Championships which will take place at Austin Friars School on Saturday March 8th.
