Carlisle Under 9 Chess Championship
held at Inglewood Junior School on 6th March 2010
Thanks as ever are due to David Bird and the Inglewood team who made this another excellent tournament.
Accelerated Swiss tournaments, where as soon as players finish one game they are paired with a new opponent, keep everyone busy and that applies to the organisers as well as the children playing. This one went as smoothly as clockwork and the quality of chess from 7, 8 and 9 year olds was often very good, evidence of the amount of thought and effort put in by the children and their teachers. Sometimes it gets very interesting as young players can interpret the rules in quite innovative ways.

All those on 50% or more are invited to enter the Cumbria junior championships, to be held at Austin Friars St Monica's School on Sunday March 21st. Hopefully they will all come and the county championships will be as competitive as this Carlisle championship was.

Primary Section
This year’s competition drew an entry of 14 teams, half of them from Newcastle Royal Grammar School. Many Carlisle schools who used to be strong in the chess world such as Scotby, Cummersdale, Thursby and Caldew Lea did not enter and the Dumfries schools were also absent. Nevertheless competition was intense and the lead changed hands several times. After 3 rounds St Teresa’s from Heaton in the north-east had a slender lead with RGS A second, Stanwix and RGS E team in joint third. The leaders met in the fourth round and it was a fascinating match which RGS just shaded 2 ½ - 1 ½ and set up a final round where any one of five teams could go top. In the event Stanwix ran out of steam and RGS A beat them 4-0 to pull away from the rest and retain the trophy. Stanwix though did retain the cup for top Cumbrian team on tie-break from Kingmoor.

Secondary
Holders Greenwood Academy were unfortunately unable to attend this year’s event and Lime House also had to pull out so we were left with 7 teams, meaning five of the teams got a bye at various stages. William Howard took an early lead winning 3-1 against QEGS while Austin Friars drew with RGS A and Trinity drew with RGS B but after two rounds 1 1.2 points covered all seven teams. Friars won 4-0 in round 3 against RGS C to go into a narrow lead over RGS A but then crashed 4-0 to Trinity in round 4 to leave RGS leading from Trinity and William Howard in third place. trinity tried their best to win the trophy with a 4-0 win over RGS C in the final round but RGS A also won 4-0 against QEGS to retain their lead while Friars beat William Howard to clinch third place.

Overall it was a noisy but happy hall full of young players determined to play their best and do the utmost damage to the opposition but fully within the letter and the spirit of the game. Well done to the 90 or so players including reserves who took part and their teachers and parents who inspired them to spend their day concentrating hard on five one hour games of chess in between the free for all football, games of tag and seeing who could eat the most hot dogs.

If anyone missed out on their medals or certificates please let me know as soon as possible. Finally thanks to Johnny Wright, Richard Bandoni and Drew Millar for their skills and patience over a long and tiring day.

Thanks once again to David Bird and his team from Inglewood Junior School for organising a very good tournament and congratulations to the young players who produced a lot of excellent chess and played every game courteously and sportingly. All the hard work put in by them and their coaches showed on the day. All players who finished with 50% and above have qualified for the Cumbria Chess Championships which will take place at Austin Friars School on Saturday March 13th.

Two more dates for your chessplayers' diary:
Sunday November 27th Cumbria Team of 4 Tournament at Austin Friars St Monica's
Saturday February ? Carlisle Under 9 Championships at Inglewood School

Cumbria Secondary Schools Chess League

Jamboree held at Lime House School, Dalston on Friday 20th November 2009

Unfortunately this was the day of the floods and Kirbie Kendal School were unable to travel. Trinity, William Howard and Ullswater had already found they were unable to take part so the result was just two schools instead of six and a straight match between Lime House and Austin Friars.
Unfortunately two of the Friars team had failed to get to school because of the flooding so had to default board 8 each time. Nevertheless the standard of chess was good, most of the games were very close and lasted near the full hour each time and Lime House showed why they won this league last year by winning the first round comfortably. Friars came back to shade the second round but Lime House carry a 3 point advantage into the second jamboree, scheduled for February.
