Austin Friars Chess Club

Friars Chess Club

The club meets at Austin Friars School every Thursday during school terms from 7.15pm. The club is open to anyone who wants to play chess, either "social", friendly games (if there is such a thing in chess!) or quiet, serious long games which can be played in a separate room.

We welcome players of any age from 9 to 90, at present about half our members are juniors who normally attend from 7.15 to 9, half are adults who play on until 10.30 or so. There is an all-play-all club championship, with open, minor and junior sections; a club rapidplay championship and events confined to juniors. We hope to increase the number and variety of these competitions wherever we have the numbers to run viable competitions.

We run four teams in the Cumbria League and are always looking for players who want to play for a team. Matches in this league may be midweek, if they are local matches, or Saturday afternoons. We also run two teams in the South Tyne Chess League with players from Carlisle Chess Club. These matches are all played midweek.

For anyone who wants to come along and just play fun chess membership is free.

For those who wish to play for teams and have their games graded etc the membership is £16 for the coming year for adults, £8 for juniors (under 18s). This includes membership of the Cumbria Chess Association and membership of the British Chess Federation via the Northern Membership Scheme.

For anyone who has already joined the NMS, membership of Friars Chess Club is £6 for adults, £3 for juniors for this year. This includes the registration fee for Cumbria Chess Association.

If you are interested just turn up any Thursday at the club, we're easy to find, or contact Syd Cassidy on 01228 528042 or by email sydcassidy@austinfriars.cumbria.sch.uk

We look forward to meeting you.
