Carlisle Knockout Tournament 2011

After crowning a new (and horrifyingly young) Lightning Champion today, the search is now on for Carlisle's premier one-shot maestro, with the new Knockout tournament. Some of you may have memories of the old tournament around the millennium, and hopefully after this inaugural edition we will have a few extra people join us. I have eleven entries, in the following order:

1. John Kelly (155)
2. Ian Mackay (141)
3. Dave Jackson (e140)
4. Kevin Southernwood (137)
5. Daniel O'Dowd (136)
6. Syd Cassidy (132)
7. Jason Maxwell (e110)
8. Bill Hardwick (105)
9. Sam McStay (99)
10. James Leitch (95)
11. Chris Royle (e90)

I have received payment from four people so far. Two or three are unsure: if you could please email me as to whether you would like in on the cash as soon as possible so I can finalise prize lists.
If everyone pays we will have a £33 kitty, and first prize will receive a new trophy for sure, probably a carved wooden Knight, with first prize probably being around £16, second £11, and third £6.

With that, on to the draw! Eleven is an awkward number, so we will have three preliminary round matches, giving us five players who will automatically qualify for R2, and six who will play games.
If you could please arrange to play your games with each other by the end of Thursday 5th May (if this would be a problem for anyone do please tell me; we are hardly constrained by time with this one at all).

The draw is as follows:
Byes in first round:
Bill Hardwick
Chris Royle
Jason Maxwell
Daniel O'Dowd
Kevin Southernwood

The first round matches are as follows:
Syd Cassidy (White) against Ian Mackay (Black)
Dave Jackson (White) against John Kelly (Black)
Sam McStay (White) against James Leitch (Black)

Coincidence abounds there! Please make your game all moves in 90 minutes. You can play your games at any time day or night (3am if you want..), and in any location. I'd appreciate a copy of the score of each game for posterity, we might even award a best game prize at the end.
The three winners of these matches will join the other five players in the quarter-finals, to be played in the second week of May hopefully at the latest.

Any problems, complaints, or other business, do let me know.
Have a pleasant Easter if I don't see you before!

Dan O'Dowd

Would you like to join?

The club meets at the bungalow next to Austin Friars St Monica's School every Thursday during school terms from 7.15pm. The club is open to anyone who wants to play chess, either "social", friendly games (if there is such a thing in chess!) or quiet, serious long games which can be played in a separate room.

We welcome players of any age from 8 to 80, at present about half our members are juniors who normally attend from 7.15 to 8.30 or 9pm, half are adults who play on until 10.30 or so. There is an all-play-all club championship, with open, minor and junior sections; a club rapidplay championship and events confined to juniors. We hope to increase the number and variety of these competitions wherever we have the numbers to run viable competitions.

We have merged fully with Carlisle Chess Club for playing matches in the Cumbria league and we run four teams, two in division 1 and two in division 2 under the Carlisle banner. Matches in this league may be midweek, if they are local matches, or Saturday or Sunday afternoons when fixtures involve one of the teams travelling greater distances.
We are still competing as 'Austins' and 'Friars' in the South Tyne Chess League. These matches are all played midweek. Anyone who wants to play for a team should find something to suit them.

For anyone who wants to come along and just play fun chess membership is free.
For those who wish to play for teams and have their games graded, enter tournaments etc the membership is £20 for the year for adults, £10 for juniors (under 18s). This includes membership of the Cumbria Chess Association and membership of the English Chess Federation.

If you are interested just turn up any Thursday at the club, we're in the bungalow opposite the Redfern, or contact Syd Cassidy on 01228 528042 or by email sydcassidy@austinfriars.cumbria.sch.uk

We look forward to meeting you.
