Individual Champions

The club championship was initiated by Dennis Bates in 2002.
Previous to that there was a very informal sort of championship, spread over the course of the season's games in the club after which we usually decided that Max Brown was club champion again.
Dennis organised it as a proper all-play-all, so many games to be played by certain deadlines with penalties if insufficient games were completed. Since Dennis won it the first two years of its existence it has always been known as "The Bates Cup" even though the trophy provided by Dennis is in fact a shield.

Club Champions (winners of "The Bates Cup")

2003-4 Dennis Bates and George Glover
2004-5 George Glover
2005-6 Terence Nabbs
2006-7 Terence Nabbs
2007-8 George Glover

The junior championship has been running for rather longer, since the club started originally as a chess club for juniors which eventually evolved into an all-ages club. Javier, Max and Terence were all also Cumbria junior champions, Max 5 years in a row.
This year Stephen has done the double, being both junior club champion and Cumbria junior champion and made a decent showing in the club adult tournament on the few occasions schoolwork would let him attend.
We also ran a club championship for those aged up to 14. This year's winner is Peter Sanders with Chris Royle runner-up.
The results of these tournaments are on a separate page.
