New Players Wanted - Support your local Chess Club!
There are chess clubs in most of the towns in Cumbria, many have existed for over 100 years.
Unfortunately many of them are also looking for new players as the number of people playing chess in clubs has declined in recent years.
This means some clubs are having difficulty in fielding teams in league and cup competitions, some have dropped out altogether.
All clubs want new members, Whitehaven, Sellafield (SASRA), Grange and Kendal perhaps more urgently than others.
If you can play chess and are prepared to give it a go why not go along to your local club or contact the organiser.
You do not have to be a great player, just enjoy playing the game.

Cumbria Chess League fixtures for 2008-9
The Scottish Premier solution wins out
By an overwhelming margin the 10 game season wins out over 7 or 14.
In division 1 all teams play each other once, 7 games.
We split the division into top 4, bottom 4 and each team plays the others in their half, 3 games. These games would be the return fixtures from the first round of matches.
Here are two more versions of next year’s fixture list. Please discard versions 1 and 2, we are now in versions 1a and 2a.
Division 1 is now decided and goes ahead as in this version. I would like more comments on division 2 before decisions are made. So far I have had some support for having two 8 team division 2 north and south (with the possibility it might work out at 7 or 8 or 9 teams depending on the number of teams entering). It is a simple solution and keeps travel down. I have also had some support for reviving division 3 if we get enough teams. It would mean travelling further but would give weaker teams their own division.
Do we want to stick to 8 teams in div 2 S, the same in div 2 N or can we increase the number of teams a bit and go for div 2 S, div 2 N and a div 3? Are there enough players out there to form enough teams?
I await your comments. So far more people have responded than to any previous survey. Keep doing it so I can get it right!

Grading - a letter from Bill Henderson
Should the Cumbria Chess Association adopt the ELO System for the grading of league games etc. and might they make a similar suggestion to any future N.C.C.U .meeting?
The E.C.F. adopted a 'new' system for grading still based on the 'English' Grading method.
Most of the World uses E.L.O. and there are software programmes readily available to allow such a switch.
Would it not be logical for Cumbria to adopt this system?
Any conversion would not take too long, perhaps just over a season, and may act as a catalyst in bringing other Counties on board.
I would hope that the County debate and consider such a change.
After all we mainly use algebraic notation these days so this is really a catching up with the rest of the World.
Now that the debate over fixtures is reaching a conclusion would anyone like to comment on Bill Henderson's proposal?
