Cumbria Junior Chess Championships 2013
Sunday, May 19th saw this year’s instalment of the Cumbria Junior Chess Championship. With an excellent venue provided by Trinity School Carlisle (for which we were and are very grateful) the grey skies and threatening drizzle held no terrors as we had ample space for parents and players indoors.
A flurry of late arrivals brought the number of entries (71 in total) up to a similar level to last year’s competition, causing the organisers a few headaches in the process. This meant a later than wanted start and, subsequently, a very loose interpretation of the playing schedule that we advertised. All our timetables are generally to be considered works of fiction and this year was no exception. However we were able to run sections for U13, U15 and U18’s, for the first time in a number of years. Normally we’ve not had the numbers to avoid combining at least two of these competitions.
In the U9’s section Joshua Hudson (Long Marton Community School) was the clear winner with a score of 6/6: Reece Raphael (Kingmoor Junior School) was second with 4.5/6.
The U11’s was a highly competitive section. In second place, with 5/6 was last year’s winner of the section Miles Davis (Skelton School). The winner, with 6/6 was James Rocca (Hayton C of E school).
The U13 section winner was another of the Davis clan. Holden Davis (Queen Elizabeth Grammar School) scored 5/5 to clinch first place whilst the runner up in the U13 competition was Holly Gill (Kirby Kendal School) with 3.5/5.
In the U15 tournament first place went to Owen Ogden (Nelson Thomlinson School) with 5/5 and second position to Avran Millar (Trinity School) with 4/5.
The final results in the U18 competition left us with a bit of a dilemma. The winner was James Moreby (Royal Grammar School) with 4.5/5. The fact that James is still only 10 years old wasn’t a difficulty but as he lives and goes to school outside of Cumbria we couldn’t award him the U18 Cumbria Trophy, only the U18 Cumbria title. The Trophy went instead to second-placed Jason Maxwell (Trinity School)
with 4/5 points, though an honourable mention goes to Camas Miller who managed to draw against James in their game.

I would like to post a few Thank You’s; firstly to Anna and Mike to provide the Crown Hotel in Eamont Bridge as a very fitting venue, to Dan and Kevin for their invaluable help and support on the weekend with pairings an general keeping of order. Also to a number of players for additional donations to the event (either deliberately or unwittingly because I didn’t have the correct change on the day) and lastly to all the players for their patience with the organisers and for making the Event what it is. I was particularly pleased to see a good number of players from the south of the County making the long trip.
